Tips on Shopping for Shampoo & Conditioner + My Current Favs!
Updated: May 9
We all get overwhelmed when it comes to going down those endless aisles of hair products. There are so many choices, commercials, ads, and opinions. Your friend, hairdresser, and fancy ad is telling you one product to use and your hair is begging for another. So which do you use? Keep reading below to see what my tips on choosing a shampoo & conditioner and my CURRENT favorites. Again, these are just my tips, tricks & favs.
Tip #1- Figure out your hair type
When it comes to choosing shampoo & conditioner, I often find that the number one problem is not choosing the right one for your specific hair type. We all want our hair to be smooth, sleek, and not frizzy. But that doesn't mean go out and buy a shampoo type that says "for frizzy unruly hair" just because you want your hair to be extra glossy. You will find that you will actually see the opposite results if you don't choose correctly. I recommend that first, you figure out your specific hair type. Do you have curly hair, wavy hair, thick hair, thinning hair, frizzy hair, straight hair, etc.
Tip #2- Figure out your hair's need
Your hair's need is based off the current state and desire of your hair situation. Are you looking to repair dry hair, combat your oily hair, fight off dandruff, thicken your hair, mend split ends, grow your hair, etc.
Tip #3- Find a brand that works best for you
Once you figure your hair type & its needs, that helps narrow down your selection. Then, it comes down to finding the brand that works best for your hair. I don't discriminate here; I am always using a mix of higher end & more affordable products. This part is where I find the recommendations helpful. But of course, everyone reacts differently so find the brand or brands that suit YOU.
Tip #4- Do not repeat the same shampoo & conditioner every time
Believe it or not, your hair gets used to hair-care products. If you use the same shampoo & conditioner for months on end, you will start to see that the claims on the bottle aren't working for you anymore. Changing up your products after your tubes go empty will keep your hair guessing (but in a good way). Don't worry, I'm not recommending to repeat these steps every single time you need to buy shampoo & conditioner again. I recommend finding at least two consistent products that you find work best for you and just keep repeating them. For example, use product x and when it runs out use product y. When product y runs out, you go back to product x. Make sense? Ok ok, enough technical stuff...let's see what I am using right now
My 3 Current Favorites
L'Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths
Right now, I am really enjoying the L'Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths Shampoo & Conditioner. I have been trying to grow out my hair even longer while keeping it healthy. I am currently using this product and have had it in the rotation twice now.
Alterna Caviar Replenishing Moisture
I love this product, but you guys, it is not cheap. It really helps nourish dry hair which I am super prone to having. I like to use this one every once in a while and it is worth the splurge. In fact, I think it will be next in my line up after I finish with the L'Oreal above.
Suave Avocado and Olive Oil
A lot of people hate on Suave but I love it! It's super affordable and sold almost everywhere. I love this product, especially in the summer because I find it helps combat frizz & humidity. This is my go to choice when I need a shampoo & conditioner fast. It's a great one to buy and leave places (such as at a significant other or friend's house) because it is always just consistently good for me.
